10 Days Before
Start by avoiding excessive use of substances that can cause complications, such as blood-thinning medications (like aspirin), alcohol, and recreational drugs. These can hinder your body's ability to heal and increase bleeding during your session.Take good care of your skin—steer clear of irritants like harsh exfoliants and protect the area from the sun and harsh weather. Keep your skin healthy and hydrated with moisturizing lotions and SPF.
2–3 Days Before
As you get closer to your appointment, continue to avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications for at least 24 hours beforehand.Make sure to properly clean and moisturize the area of skin that will be tattooed, but avoid shaving unless your artist advises you to, as this can lead to irritation.
Day Of
On the big day, hydrate yourself well and enjoy a healthy, filling meal before your appointment.Dress in dark, comfortable, and loose clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area.
Bring along the essentials like a water bottle, a snack, headphones, and a phone charger!
At Home
Check out aftercare instructions but also set your self up for success by having clean bed sheets, proper aftercare products and anything else your artist might recommend.
Most Importantly...
Communicate with your artist. Discuss any concerns or medical conditions ahead of time, including allergies or skin sensitivities. This information helps your artist ensure your comfort and safety throughout the process. If you’re feeling nervous or have questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
-
Proper healing and aftercare are crucial.
Following the right steps not only helps prevent complications like infection or scarring but also ensures your tattoo heals beautifully.
Every artist will have different recommendations, so always ask your artist for specific aftercare instructions tailored to your tattoo and skin type.
Keep it clean: Gently wash your tattoo with fragrance-free, mild soap and lukewarm water during the healing process. Avoid scrubbing.
Moisturize: Apply a thin layer of artist-recommended lotion to keep your tattoo hydrated and prevent excessive scabbing.
Do not soak: Refrain from swimming, hot tubs, or soaking the tattoo in water until it’s fully healed.
Protect from the sun: Direct sunlight can fade your tattoo. Once healed, always use sunscreen on the tattooed area when exposed.
Don’t pick or scratch: Let the tattoo naturally peel and flake. Avoid scratching, as it can affect healing and lead to scarring.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support your body’s natural healing process.
